Battery Technology Held Back the EV Revolution

Batteries power nearly every aspect of our modern connected lives. From our phones to our homes to the vehicles that transport us from Point A to Point Z. They are inextricably the future of energy.
As the electrification of all kinds of vehicles continue to gain popularity, it begs the question: Why are most batteries, especially electric vehicle (EV) batteries, so dumb when they’re the single most important component?
“How we create, store, and distribute energy in the world’s cities is paramount to combating climate change,” said Horace Luke, CEO and founder of Gogoro. “As cities around the world grow into megacities, the impending mobility needs of those urban areas relies heavily on distributing energy in smarter, more efficient ways and making it easier for everyone to access.”
For decades, EV makers and consumers alike have sought cheaper batteries with greater range, largely ignoring convenience.
Batteries, chemically speaking, simply weren’t optimized for density—meaning that when confined to fit in the limited space of a light motorbike, for example, they couldn’t hold enough energy or provide enough power to get people where they needed to go. At least not comfortably or safely.
Plus, batteries were expensive. Even if you safely crammed together enough of them for a fast ride or a longer ride, the result would be an unwieldy and heavy machine with an equally heavy price tag.
So, rather than wait for the technology to catch up, we designed a smarter battery that would inspire a global technological shift that would span industries and spark a rapid urban mobility trend.
